Still Warm Enough

We have had some nights in the 30's and still, we haven't become cold enough to turn on either of our furnaces. It has been as low as 66 in my office, which was yesterday morning. But yesterday was also clear and sunny all day, so the greenhouse effect brought us up enough so that this morning it is 70 in my office. Also, interestingly, on a very windy night, the temperature never dipped below 54. I guess we got a little flavor of those Santa Anna winds. Today is very clear again, so I suspect we can gain enough heat to last us most of a week, which means we will probably make it to November 1st, in comfort, without using heat!

There was a slight frost here last Wednesday night. It burned the tips of all the tomato and pepper plants in the garden. Since then it has been warmer each night. Last night I slept in the hammock but it was very cold in the open like that. This morning I opened all the doors in the house to let the heat of the day come in. It's about 75 degrees here in the daytime, and cold enough to run the furnace each night.

There is a straw bale house about 1.5 miles down the dirt road here. I hope to get a chance to see it up close this week. I'll bet they aren't running their furnace(s) either.

Do you mean it got down to 54 !inside! your house after a windy night? I guess it is more reasonable when I realize that you have all that window area and assuming the wind was coming from a Southeasterly or Southwesterly direction so it got a maxim heat transfer effect in "burbling" past the windowed side of the house.
But on the other hand, our house is staying above mid- to upper-60's at night starting from ~70, with the thermostat set at 62 from 1930hours on.

No, it was 54 outside. Inside it is now as low as it has been all year: 66. If we could catch some sunbreaks today, we might press on until November. Otherwise, we may elect to fire up the woodstove within the next 24 hours.
