I was going to say the same thing as Margy said, so I will add to her ominous message: "It applies!"
Being on land would only keep you safe if you lived in a place like, say South Dakota where it doesn't rain. The above holds true only in the Summer. In the Winter, it is a serious omen because it means a blizzard is going to strand you.
Or maybe a girl that you jilted in High School is going to throw a snowball at you.

Red skies in the morning, sailors warning. Red skies at night, sailors delight. Not sure if it applies if you are inland and away from water.
