Each party must have a GMail account, which is open for anyone with a cell-phone to sign up as of today. I could really see this catching on like wildfire.

I don't know what the big deal is...I have had a free AOL chat account for a year so people can chat at work (that is the sucky standard at work) and I have had a free yahoo chat account for like two years and a free MSN chat account for about 4-5 years.
So far googletalk doesn't seem to be anything special.
