Spending Your Time Wisely

I heard on NPR this week about a man who wrote a diary that documented his entire life, in 5-minute segments! 24 hours a day!
He kept track of everything; I'm talking about the temperature of the walls, ceiling and floor of his den, for example.
Well, my blog is not nearly that detailed, but it does raise an interesting point: what content is worthy enough to take the time to write it and take all the readers time who read it?

It's an ongoing consideration, but one thing that I'm sure is worth the time is this:
The brand-new video game I created*
http://www.popfly.ms/users/utherp/Zimstroids

* Okay, I had a little help. Actually I just supplied the picture. :) But the website is mine to keep, and share!

UPDATE: This game apparently doesn't "just work" as I expected it to. It's not particularly amazing, so don't bother unless you're interested in seeing what microsoft's Popfly is all about.

I don't understand. The web site asked me to logon, then nothing happened. Every menu option I tried seemed to want me to fill out my demographic information.

I didn't find any photos or video games.

I read a little bit from the Microsoft "Terms of Use" (TOU), and got a chuckle: They say you need to agree to this TOU before you can use the web site, and that Microsoft reserves the right to change the TOU at any time, without notice. So I say, if they can change the terms of notice, and
I will have no idea what the terms are, then why do I have to "agree" to them?

I think the Microsoft lawyers need to go back to school and take some Philosophy classes.

You shouldn't have to sign in or sign up to anything. If the game doesn't load it is probably because your browser doesn't have the necessary plug-ins or javascript is not enabled.

Sorry if this ends up not working. I had understood that it would "just work" in any browser, but I didn't read the fine print I guess.

Hey, it works, but you need to install
Microsoft Silverlight,
and ignore all of the menu options, the sign-in,
and the warning about not entering any personal information.
That blue thing in faded text is supposed to be the instructions for downloading Silverlight,
by clicking on the blue arrow pointing down.
Be sure and read the license agreement if you enjoy the humor of poorly-written legal documents.

I proved that it works by launching it in IE, although
I don't typically use IE.

Next, I went back to FireFox and installed Silverlight again. It seemed to work, but in the middle of the game,
the script became unresponsive.
Worse yet, the default response in the error message is to stop the script, so when I was excitedly shooting
at asteroid photos, I must have accepted the default, which made the game freeze.

My recommendation is to run this in IE if you want to have fun.

Boy howdy, I've faced the same conundrum on many occasions; what constitutes "interesting" vs. just filler? What is worth the time to record? But I mean, obviously that guy on NPR has a personality disorder of some magnitude... I always like those sorts of news stories; I haven't heard it yet, but did it take the form of the "hey, everyone! Look at the freak!" variety? Like, a soft-news story that is actually about someone who for all intents and purposes is quite mentally ill?
I remember reading a story many years ago about a guy who only ate McDonalds. This was well before Morgan Spurlock, and the guy wasn't doing it as an experiment. That's just what he ate: some sort of breakfast sandwich, and then quarter pounders with fries for the other two meals. Sometimes he'd switch it up with a Big Mac. And the tone of the piece was, "oh ho ho ho, check this guy out! Isn't he a gas! He only eats Micky D's!" But my reaction was, "holy crap, this guy needs some serious help! Isn't this a desperate cry for assistance???"
Anyhoo. I forgot what I was talking about. :)

Oh yeah, I remember now! What happened when he was asleep???

I'm not sure how he accounted for his sleep time, it was a question on my mind too, but they didn't really address it on the show.

There does seem to be a fine line between reporting unusual news and picking on the mentally ill. But the guy had had a career as a English teacher and was perfectly affable in the interview. He admitted it was an obsession; he had no other explanation for why he did it.
He willed his massive collection of hardbound diary-entries to WSU, where it will remain sealed for 50 years.
Perhaps some enterprising researcher will find value in what was recorded?

Getting back to the Popfly video game; Bopop showed me how to get the game on IE (after loading Supersliver or whatever that add-on is called). Then Ramiro had fun playing the game! He quickly got to a score of 12,159 -- beating Bopop's alleged best of 8,000. But then, Grumpy and Bobop are not into games like all you young'uns.
